Present.me

Present.me is a new service that allows you to easily broadcast your PowerPoint presentations to others on Web. The full experience of a presentation is the goal as Present.me provides the ability to transmit your slides synchronized with a video of your presentation. An overview of the service was featured at The Startup Project.

VisionSync, the creators of the highly successful Facebook dating app, Social Connect, are preparing to launch what they’re billing as “the most personalized personals site on planet Earth” at Dating.me.

TestPilot.me

A new service for software developers that offers automated continuous integration for Ruby is set to launch at TestPilot.me. Not sure what automated continuous integration is, well, neither were we, but we did find this helpful article that provides a good explanation.

Why your business should be on a .ME domain name

Monday, April 4th, 2011

First, we’ll start by saying that we hold a number of .me domain names and therefore have an interest in seeing the .me domain continue to grow. We made a calculated decision based on what we believe is the enormous potential of this one of a kind domain extension.

It’s quickly becoming the domain extension of the next generation of the Web. We’ve written extensively about the recent proliferation of new ventures being built on .me domain names.

The .me domain is unique in being able to provide an element of engagement to a domain name. It might sound corny but it can speak to a user in a way that no other TLD can. When used in combination with generic names, the .me extension provides brandability while also realizing the benefits of the generic term memorability whereas the .com makes a generic name sound, well, generic and banal.

As we posted earlier, the .ME Registry still holds a number of premium domain names that have yet to allocated or put up for auction. We’d like to see the .me domain continue to grow and build on its momentum and the development of premium domain names such as those being offered will help to achieve that, so we’re doing our small part to bring attention to .ME Registry’s development program.

We believe we’re reaching a tipping point for the .me TLD whereby the burgeoning adoption of the .me domain for new websites will increase the public’s awareness of the extension and drive an even more rapid pace of .me development. We feel the .me domain is now entering this positive feedback loop.

It’s an exciting time to be writing about the .me domain and we’re looking forward to posting news about all the .me websites that we anticipate will be launching soon.

Based on numbers of Google indexed pages, .ME has seen significantly more global development than .CO

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Ok, we tried to resist further posts about the Joan Rivers TLD (at least for a while), but some .CO supporters have been promoting misleading statistics on message boards about the number of pages of .CO sites indexed in Google.

They cite a search of site:.co which yields 209 million results. This number amounts to a distortion if one is attempting to accurately assess the number of .co pages indexed since the relaunch of the .co ccTLD last year.

The .co domain was issued to Colombia in 1991 and since that time third-level domains have been established on second-level extensions such as .com.co, .edu.co, .gov.co, .org.co, and .net.co.

So, in order to provide a more accurate assessment of the number of pages created on the relaunched .co ccTLD, one would have to exclude them from the results with the following search string:

site:.co -.com.co -.gov.co -.edu.co -.net.co -.org.co -.mil.co -.nom.co

Entering the query above yields less than 10 million results. So, the 200 million plus number is misinformation.

Let’s compare this to .ME, a ccTLD that became active in 2007 with worldwide registration being opened in July 2008. It didn’t exist in any form prior to 2007, so it wasn’t a relaunch like .co, which had active sites on third-level domains since the early 90s.

A Google search of site:.me yields 161 million results. In order to make a more fair comparison between the number of pages indexed of each ccTLD, we’ll run the search while eliminating indexed third-level domains on the second-level extensions reserved for Montenegrin citizens and entities.

So we would run the search as follows:

site:.me -.co.me -.net.me -.org.me -.edu.me -.ac.me -.gov.me -.its.me -.priv.me

(note: these second-level domains are described in the Wikipedia entries for .ME and .CO)

This search yields over 46 million results.

So, the the following tally of indexed pages provides more useful numbers when attempting to assess the global development on the ccTLDs:

.ME – 46.6 million

.CO – 9.8 million

We find that using this method .ME has 4.75 times the number of indexed pages of .CO.

(note: you may not get exactly the same results when running the Google searches described above but the numbers should be close, results sometimes vary)

Many will likely find this to be a trivial matter, but we just had to get this off our chest.

Personal .ME domain names and social network profile pages are a perfect combination

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

We believe that there is significant demand on the part of Internet users to have custom .ME domain names attached to their online profiles on social networking sites.

Registrars and social networking sites should form partnerships that would allow users to easily create and redirect a custom .ME domain name to these profile pages.

Whoever is able to offer this feature will have a significant advantage in drawing users to their service.

Who will be the first to capitalize on this? Facebook, Flavors.me, or About.me? Or will it be a whole new service, perhaps Google should consider building their social networking platform around this idea.

At the very least, .ME domain name registrars could promote this potential use as an option on their sites. Registrars should provide instructions to .ME domain name purchasers on how they could forward the .ME domain name they purchase to whichever profile page they choose and they need to make the process user friendly. Perhaps, they could include a list of social networking sites from which one could select and merely enter their username in order activate the .ME domain name forwarding service.

We believe that there is an enormous market for the use of .ME domain names as addresses for social network profile pages, so it’s just a matter of who will be the first to effectively implement this idea.

Update 1/20/11

Flavors.me does in fact offer this feature to users.

.ME registry sees a spike in traffic according to Alexa

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Of course Alexa rankings are not flawless indicators of web popularity but they can help to identify trends and one thing that we’ve noticed over the past couple of days, in particular, and really the past few weeks is that the official .ME registry, Domain.me, has been seeing a surge in traffic. It would appear that our predictions of .ME going mainstream and shaking up the web in 2011 are looking more and more likely.

Here is the Alexa ranking for Domain.me
